  166.        Thank you  for trying  DiskDupe. DiskDupe  is the  best program to
  167.        automate your disk duplicating needs. DiskDupe can duplicate disks
  168.        amazingly fast and without any fuss. You won't waste any more time
  169.        with slow, cumbersome DOS commands.

  172.        FAST AND EASY
  173.  
  174.        To duplicate  disks, insert  the master  disk in your floppy drive
  175.        and let  DiskDupe read  it into your computer's RAM memory and, if
  176.        necessary, onto  your hard  disk. DiskDupe  can then  make as many
  177.        duplicates as you want without having to re-read the master disk.
  178.  
  179.        DiskDupe  uses   advanced  DMA  and  multi-tasking  techniques  to
  180.        duplicate 62,  5" or  31, 3"  disks per  hour, complete  with full
  181.        formatting and  verification. If  your master  disk is  less  than
  182.        full, DiskDupe will run even faster.

  184.        If you  want to  protect your master disk, DiskDupe lets you store
  185.        its image  on your hard disk. Then later, when your master disk is
  186.        safely put away, you can use the image to make more duplicates.

  188.        If you  have lots of master disks that you need to make just a few
  189.        duplicates of,  DiskDupe's RELAY feature makes it easy. Simply put
  190.        write protect  tabs on  all of  your master disks. Then place your

  285.        HARD DISK INSTALLATION

  287.        To install DiskDupe on your hard disk, copy all the files from the
  288.        program disk  into a  subdirectory on  your hard disk. To do this,
  289.        follow these instructions:
  290.  
  291.        1. Boot up your computer as usual until a C> prompt appears.
  292.  
  293.        2. Type: MD  \DISKDUPE and press <ENTER>.
  294.  
  295.        3. Type: CD  \DISKDUPE and press <ENTER>.
  296.  
  297.        4. Insert  the DiskDupe  disk in the A: drive and type: COPY A:*.*
  298.        <ENTER>.
  299.  
  300.        ADVANCED USERS: DiskDupe will search your PATH for its data files.
  301.        This means  that you  can place the \DISKDUPE subdirectory in your
  302.        PATH  so  that  you  do  not  need  to  change  to  the  \DISKDUPE
  303.        subdirectory every time you want to run DiskDupe.

  306.        FLOPPY DISK INSTALLATION
  307.  
  308.        DiskDupe works  better in  conjunction with  a hard  disk. If  you
  309.        don't have  a hard disk you need 640k RAM memory in your computer.
  310.        You will only be able to copy 360k disks.
  311.  
  312.        If you  need to  use DiskDupe  on a  floppy disk, you will need to
  313.        copy the  DiskDupe files  to a blank formatted disk and then start
  314.        DiskDupe and erase the temporary file name. To do this, follow the
  315.        instructions below:
  316.  
  317.        1. Format  a blank  disk. See  your DOS manual for instructions on
  318.        how to do this.
  319.  
  320.        2. Place  the original  DiskDupe disk in the B: drive and put your
  321.        blank formatted disk in the A: drive and type COPY B:DISKDUPE.* A:
  322.        and press <ENTER>.
  323.  
  324.        3. Start DiskDupe by typing DISKDUPE and pressing <ENTER>.
  325.  
  326.        4. Pull  down the  Options menu  by first  pressing <ESC> and then
  327.        pressing O  and <ENTER>.  Select the  Temp File option by typing T
  328.        and pressing  <ENTER>. Keep  pressing the  <DEL> key  to erase the
  329.        Temp File name. Press the <ENTER> key to save the changes and then
  330.        quit DiskDupe by selecting QUIT and press <ENTER>.

  342.        CONFIGURATION
  343.  
  344.        Now that  DiskDupe is  installed, you need to tell it what type of
  345.        disk drives  your computer has. This is done in the Setup menu. To
  346.        change the disk drive types, follow the instructions below:
  347.  
  348.        1. Start  DiskDupe by  typing CD  \DISKDUPE and  pressing <ENTER>.
  349.        Then type DISKDUPE and press <ENTER>.
  350.  
  351.        2. Press  the <RIGHT>  arrow key until the menu cursor is over the
  352.        SETUP choice and press <ENTER>.
  353.  
  354.        3. Choose  the disk drive you want to change by using the <UP> and
  355.        <DOWN> arrow  keys and  then  pressing  <ENTER>.  A  list  of  all
  356.        available drive  types will  appear. Use the <UP> and <DOWN> arrow
  357.        keys to  select the correct type of drive that is in your computer
  358.        and press <ENTER>.

  360.        4. Quit  DiskDupe by  pressing <ESC>  then press the <RIGHT> arrow
  361.        key until  the menu  cursor is over the QUIT choice and then press
  362.        <ENTER>. Your changes will be saved.

  430.        USING THE MENUS
  431.  
  432.        To move the menu cursor, you can use the <RIGHT>, <LEFT>, <UP> and
  433.        <DOWN> arrow keys or type in the first letter of the menu choice.
  434.  
  435.        For instance  to change  the source  disk, press the <RIGHT> arrow
  436.        key once  and press  <ENTER>. Then  press the <DOWN> key to select
  437.        the B: drive.
  438.  
  439.        When you  are ready  to start  duplicating disks, select DUPLICATE
  440.        under the GO menu.
  441.  
  442.        To exit a menu or to stop duplicating disks, press the <ESC> key.
  443.  
  444.        After you  are finished  using DiskDupe, choose the QUIT option to
  445.        exit DiskDupe and return to the DOS prompt.
  446.

  448.  
  449.                                DISKDUPE FEATURES
  450.

  452.        REGULAR COPIES
  453.  
  454.        Duplicate makes an exact copy of a disk. In its simplest form, you
  455.        put the  disk you  want to duplicate in the Source drive, DiskDupe
  456.        reads it  and then  writes out  duplicates of  this  disk  to  the
  457.

  464.        Destination drive. Since DiskDupe buffers the entire disk image in
  465.        RAM memory  and on  your hard  disk, the  Source  and  Destination
  466.        drives can be the same drive.
  467.  
  468.  
  469.        RELAY
  470.  
  471.        If you  want to make backup copies of a stack of floppy disks, the
  472.        easiest way  to do  it is to use Relay. To use Relay, select RELAY
  473.        from the  SOURCE pull-down  menu. Next, put a write protect tab on
  474.        all of your master disks.
  475.  
  476.        To duplicate  the disks,  first insert  a master disk with a write
  477.        protect tab  into the Destination drive. Choose DUPLICATE from the
  478.        GO menu  to read the next disk.  Then insert a blank disk into the
  479.        drive. Continue  inserting as many blank disks as you want to make
  480.        copies of.  When you  have made all the copies of this master disk
  481.        you want,  put the  next master disk into the drive. DiskDupe will
  482.        sense the  write protect tab and realize that this is a new master
  483.        disk. It  will read  it in  like a  new master  disk. You can then
  484.        continue the  process for  as long  as  you  want.  When  you  are
  485.        finished making copies, press the <ESC> key.
  486.  
  487.        When using  Relay, only  the Destination  drive will  be used. Any
  488.        Source drive previously set will be ignored.
  489.  
  490.        CAUTION: Be  sure to  put write protect tabs on all of your master
  491.        disks. If you don't, they will be overwritten.
  492.  
  493.  
  494.        FILE
  495.  
  496.        If you  would like  to store  a disk  image as a file on your hard
  497.        disk, choose  FILE from  the Destination  Menu and A: or B: as the
  498.        source drive and then select Duplicate from the Go menu. This will
  499.        create an  image file  on your hard disk which you can use to make
  500.        duplicates without having to re-read the master disk.
  501.  
  502.        For instance, if you want to create a disk image file named DISK1,
  503.        type DISK1.DDI. When you select Duplicate, the master disk will be
  504.        read and  the disk image file will be created. Image filenames all
  505.        have the extension .DDI to distinguish them from other files.
  506.  
  507.        If you have previously created a disk image file you want to copy,
  508.        select the  filename of  the disk  from the Source, File menu. For
  509.        instance, if  you have  a disk image file named DISK1.DDI, type in
  510.        DISK1.DDI and  the copies  will be made from this disk image file.
  511.        DiskDupe uses  the file  extension .DDI  which stands for DiskDupe
  512.        Image file.   The  program will accept any valid file created with
  513.        any extension. The image file must have been created by DiskDupe.

  515.        If you  are not  sure what  the filename  of the DDI file is, type
  516.        *.DDI and  press <ENTER>.  A list will appear of all the available
  517.

  525.        DDI files  and you  can use  the arrow  keys to select one.  Press
  526.        <ENTER> when the bar cursor is over the file you want to use.
  527.  
  528.  
  529.        STANDBY DRIVE
  530.  
  531.        If you  have two drives that support the same disk format (i.e two
  532.        5" drives  or two  3" drives)  you can  choose the  menu selection
  533.        labeled A:  & B:  and called the Standby drive. Using it will save
  534.        the time it normally takes to change the disk.
  535.  
  536.        The Standby  drive works  as follows: The master disk will be read
  537.        from drive  A:. While  it is  being read,  you will put in a blank
  538.        disk in  drive B:.  As soon  as DiskDupe  is finished reading from
  539.        drive A:,  it will start writing to the disk in drive B:. As it is
  540.        writing to  the disk  in drive  B:, you  will put  a blank disk in
  541.        drive A:,  then when  the disk  in drive  B: is finished, DiskDupe
  542.        will start  writing to  the disk  in drive  A:. This will continue
  543.        until all the disks are copied.
  544.  
  545.  
  546.        TYPE
  547.  
  548.        Set the  copy type  based on the type of the source disk. Normally
  549.        this would  be the  same as the drive type. In the case of a 1.4Mb
  550.        drive, however,  you can  set the copy type to either 3.5" 720k or
  551.        3.5" 1.4Mb  disks depending on what type of disk you are trying to
  552.        copy.
  553.  
  554.        NOTE: Although  you can  duplicate 360k  disks in  a 5.25",  1.2Mb
  555.        drive, it  is not  recommended. The  5.25", 1.2Mb  drives write  a
  556.        smaller track  than usual  so they  do not  make  very  good  360k
  557.        duplicates.
  558.  
  559.        If you  are doing  a direct  conversion, set  the copy type to the
  560.        type of  the source disk. For instance, if you are copying a 5.25"
  561.        360k disk to a 3.5" 720 disk, set the copy type to 5.25" 360k.
  562.  
  563.        If you  are copying  from an  image file,  be sure to set the copy
  564.        type to the type of the image file.
  565.  
  566.  
  567.        FORMAT OPTION
  568.  
  569.        The Format  and Verify  options are used to help speed up the disk
  570.        duplicating time.  If you always use new disks when making copies,
  571.        go to FORMAT under the OPTIONS menu, press <ENTER> and then select
  572.        ALWAYS.  This will save a few seconds that DiskDupe normally takes
  573.        to identify  that a disk is blank and shift into Format mode. When
  574.        Format is  set to  ALWAYS, a  360k disk  will take  less  than  58
  575.        seconds to duplicate.

  577.        If, however,  you sometimes  use disks that are pre-formatted, you
  578.        can save  a lot  of time  by setting FORMAT  to ONLY IF NECESSARY.

  586.        This will  skip the  format step  on disks  that  have  been  pre-
  587.        formatted. You  can use  this option even if you use a combination
  588.        of pre-formatted  and new  disks because DiskDupe will still sense
  589.        when a  disk is  new and  automatically shift into format mode for
  590.        that disk.
  591.  
  592.  
  593.        VERIFY OPTION
  594.  
  595.        If you  are confident  that the  disks you have pre-formatted have
  596.        not been  subsequently damaged,  you can  also set  VERIFY to ONLY
  597.        AFTER FORMAT.  On pre-formatted disks this can cut the duplicating
  598.        time on a 360k disk down to less than 16 seconds per disk.
  599.  
  600.        Be aware,  however, that if the disks have been damaged after they
  601.        were formatted  (for  instance,  someone  accidently  touched  the
  602.        floppy disk  surface), DiskDupe  will  probably  not  detect  this
  603.        damage if  VERIFY is  set to  ONLY AFTER FORMAT. Duplicating times
  604.        for pre-formatted  disks when  Verify is  set to  ALWAYS are still
  605.        fairly quick.
  606.  
  607.  
  608.        TEMP FILE
  609.  
  610.        The Temp  File is the file on your hard disk where DiskDupe stores
  611.        any part  of the  disk image  that will  not fit in memory. If you
  612.        have at  least 640k  of  RAM  memory  in  your  computer  and  are
  613.        duplicating 360k  disks, the  entire disk  will fit  in memory and
  614.        will not  have to  be buffered.  If however,  you are  duplicating
  615.        another type  of disk  or don't  have as  much memory, part of the
  616.        disk will be buffered to this file.
  617.  
  618.        DiskDupe will  only store  the parts  of the disk with data on it.
  619.        For instance,  if you  are duplicating  a disk  that is  only half
  620.        full, only  that half  of the  disk that  has data  on it  will be
  621.        stored.
  622.  
  623.        Note: If  files have  been erased  from a  disk, DiskDupe  may  be
  624.        fooled into  thinking that  there is  more data  on the  disk than
  625.        there really  is. To  help DiskDupe  work most  efficiently, it is
  626.        best to use a newly formatted disk as your master disk.
  627.  
  628.  
  629.        AUTOMATIC DISK SENSING
  630.  
  631.        DiskDupe automatically senses when you change disks without having
  632.        to touch  the keyboard.  This will  speed up  your duplication and
  633.        also eliminate errors.
  634.  
  635.        To sense  a disk  change, DiskDupe  needs to keep the drive on. So

  649.        DiskDupe allows  you to copy directly from a 5" disk to a 3" disk.
  650.        Since it  does this with a track by track copy, all volume labels,
  651.        subdirectories and hidden files will be copied.
  652.  
  653.        You can  also use  this direct conversion feature to copy from any
  654.        lower density  disk to  a higher  density disk. That means you can
  655.        copy a  3", 720k disk to a 5", 1.2Mb disk. However, you can't copy
  656.        a higher  density disk to a lower density disk, even if the higher
  657.        density disk is almost empty.

  659.        When copying  from a  lower density disk to a higher density disk,
  660.        there will be some space left over on the higher density disk. For
  661.        instance, when  copying from  a 5",  360k disk to a 3", 720k disk,
  662.        only half of the 3" disk will be used.

  667.        DiskDupe sounds an alarm when it encounters a bad disk and ask you
  668.        to press the <ENTER> key. This alerts you that there is a bad disk
  669.        to make sure you don't accidently put it in the good disk pile.

  675.        There are  several ways  you can  optimize the speed of the copies
  676.        made with DiskDupe.

  679.        CLEAN MASTER
  680.  
  681.        DiskDupe works  faster when the master disk is "clean". This means
  682.        that the master disk was formatted before any files were copied to
  683.        it.
  684.  
  685.        Using a  clean disk,  DiskDupe is  able to sense which part of the
  686.        disk has  valid data  on it  and only  duplicate that  part of the
  687.        disk. If you have a master disk which has had many different files
  688.        copied to  it and then erased, DiskDupe will have to duplicate the
  689.        entire disk  even though  all of  the disk  might not contain real
  690.        data.

  692.        To make a clean master disk, first format a disk. Then use the DOS
  693.        COPY command to copy the necessary files onto this newly formatted
  694.        disk. This disk can now be used as your clean master disk.

  733.        is convenient.

  736.        sure that  FORMAT is set to ONLY IF NECESSARY and VERIFY is set to
  737.        ONLY AFTER FORMAT on the SETUP menu.

  739.        3. If you are nervous about not verifying the disk after you write
  740.        to it,  set the  VERIFY option  to ALWAYS.  This will increase the
  741.        duplicating times but will re-verify the entire disk.

  747.        Most DiskDupe parameters can be entered from the DOS command line.
  748.        This allows  you to  create DOS batch files to automate the use of
